RIVERWIND POULTRY (Summer 2009 update)

As fall 2009 is upon us we are starting to feel some of the cooling effects of pre-winter.  This past summer we experienced a few changes with our poultry.  We have made a new commitment to sell allot of our eggs to  "Cackle Hatchery" in our our hometown of Lebanon, Missouri.  Last year "Griffith Hatchery" of Fulton, Missouri purchased most of our eggs, however is going through some restructuring this year.

With selling to a much larger hatchery (Cackle Hatchery) in order to meet demand we are ramping up select flocks of birds to try to achieve flock sizes of 50 or more birds of a particular color.  In preparation for next year's egg laying spring we are downsizing the number of breeds we have, in order to ramp up the breeds we will be selling to the hatcheries.  Sort of downsizing to upsize LOL.  We are selecting the following breeds to focus primarily on:  Light Brahma, Buff/Gold Brahma, Partridge Silkie, Buff Silkie, Gold Laced Cochin, Silver Laced Cochin and Buff Cochin.  We will continue our Ancona Duck, Cayuga Duck and the much loved Sebastopool Geese, all on the rare heritage breeds list.  We will continue to "Dabble" in some of the other breeds including Salmon Favorelle, Mottled Houdan and the beautiful Red/Golden Pheasants.  This expansion will take us to somewhere in the vacanity of over (300) chickens and fowl!

When we have access stock, we will continue to sell stuff at some of our favorite swap meets including FORDLAND SWAP and JACOBS CAVE SWAP to name a few.  If you are interested in any particular breeds of eggs email us and we can either ship you eggs for hatching yourself or possibly get you live birds for pickup here.  Sorry we DO NOT SHIP LIVE BIRDS.

RED GOLDEN PHEASANT (Let the picture below describe their beauty!)

RED GOLDEN PHEASANT (Cock/Rooster) shown above, the hens are the same size but appear in multi brown and tan colors.  These are one of the most beautiful birds I have ever seen, and after seeing them at a large exotic zoo, and again a few years later, I researched for weeks trying to find out WHAT they were, finally I have a good start to a flock of about 8, who should start laying by Spring of 2009.

READ MORE ABOUT SOME OF OUR BREEDS BELOW...

Faverolles (Rare Heritage Poultry Breed) An interesting breed that combines a beard and muffs with a single comb and feathered legs and feet. Faverolles are a medium sized breed and fairly loosely feathered, giving them a rather large appearance. They also have a fifth toe on each foot and while chiefly ornamental, do possess some utility characteristics as well.

Brahma (Rare Heritage Poultry Breed) The Brahma Chicken, which is also known as Brahms, Chittagongs, Grey Shanghais, and Brahma Pootras, is an excellent breed of pet chicken which originated from India.  They are average sized compared to other domesticated birds, and are relatively non-agressive.  In fact they make wonderful pets because of their docile and gentle nature, not to mention their good looks which make them a favorite at local fairs and shows.  They can be commonly found on country estates, and are well adapted to the cooler temperatures.  They come in three colors, the LIGHT (White), Buff (Shown Below) and Dark.

Houdan (Rare Heritage Poultry Breed) Origin: Houdans originated in France where they enjoy a good reputation as a high class table fowl. Characteristics: Houdans possess a crest, beard and muffs and have five toes on each foot. Their rectangular bodies are set on fairly short legs. They are one of the better ornamental breeds for general utility use. Because of their crest, they require plenty of space and feed and water containers that prevent them from getting the crest wet and dirty, especially in cold weather. Because of the fifth toe, baby Houdans often walk with a skipping gait.

Cochin (Exotic Favorite) Cochins came originally from China but underwent considerable development in the U.S. and now are found and admired in many parts of the world. They are known to be excellent mothers, even foster mothers for many rare breeds.  Characteristics: Cochins are literally big, fluffy balls of feathers. They are mainly kept as an ornamental fowl and are well suited to close confinement. The profuse leg and foot feathering makes it desirable to confine Cochins on wet days and where yards become muddy to keep the birds from becoming mired or collecting balls of mud on their feet. They exhibit extremely persistent broodiness, are good mothers and are intense layers for short periods of time. Because of their feathering, it is necessary to clip some of the feathers or resort to artificial insemination to obtain good rates of fertility.

Silkie (Exotic Favorite) Silkie Bantams are excellent birds to keep as a brooder or as a pet. They are quite gentle and adapt well to human handling. The Silkie Bantam is docile by nature and craves attention. Silkie Bantam hens are excellent brooders and will even hatch and care for other types of fowl. Silkie hens are so naturally broody that they will sometimes brood when no eggs are present! Many people who keep game birds or partridges prefer to hatch the eggs naturally rather than use an incubator. In cases such as these, the keeper often has a flock of Silkies he uses primarily to hatch the other birds' eggs. The Silkie hen herself does not lay very many eggs because, like most chickens, they do not lay while brooding. Luckily, the Silkie hen does not have to care for the chicks alone. The males often possess many maternal instincts as well. Male Silkies are generally very gentle towards the chicks and will even bring choice bits of food to chicks. A Silkie's average lifespan is between 12 and 14 years, so long as they are alowed to graze and lead a happy life, show birds are expected to have a shorter life span.

NOTE: Silkies are a great  addition to any rabbitry.  WHY? because they cannot fly, therefore they are a 100% ground dwelling bird, even laying in nests on the ground level.  They will not fly up on top of your cages and make a mess, instead they do a great job of "tidying up" with all that "Stuff" that falls thru a rabbit's hutch, and RECYCLE it into farm fresh eggs!
